Chapter 25

Delve

The pair proceeded cautiously over the arched stone bridge that spanned a gorge whose bottom was obscured by darkness. Though he couldn’t be sure, Unnamed suspected something vast lurked in those depths. He could hear the sounds of movement and heavy breathing above the din of the wind rushing through the chamber, and he still remembered the gruesome deaths he suffered in one of the earliest rooms he encountered exploring the Rat Run.

To either side of the bridge, the walls disappeared, stretching off into the distance until darkness consumed them. While the stone of the bridge underfoot felt secure enough, the combination of fathomless depths below and no sign of any walls made Unnamed more than a little nervous about the crossing.

As they reached the midpoint of the bridge, muttered words took form in the bustling wind, carrying strange phrases from another world that were spoken in moans and hissing protestations.

Two all-beef patties…special sauce…lettuce...cheese…pickles, onions…on a sesame seed bun…

Unnamed stopped dead, squinting as he looked out over the bottomless expanse to either side. The words had been spoken by multiple tortured voices, as though forced through torture, but there was no mistaking the message. As he listened again, he heard other familiar phrases.

…melts in your mouth…not in…your hands…

Surely he was mishearing. It was like he was wandering through a torture chamber where beloved mascots were being forced to repeat their catch phrases while being stretched on the rack. The voices continued, growing louder and more urgent as he continued walking.

…just…do…it…

Unnamed quickened his pace, somewhat disoriented by the peculiar slogans. By contrast, Pax seemed unaffected by the howling winds and the strange, tortured words. He followed Unnamed with his small lantern, his shovel in hand that he used like a walking stick as they crossed to the other side and moved into yet another tunnel.

Mercifully, the voices stopped as they reached the other side of the chasm, and Unnamed tried to put them behind him. They made no sense, but neither did the logos and symbols that had been carved into the walls higher up in the dungeon.

As they went on, signs of changes to the dungeon began to appear. The tunnels were less precisely constructed, more commonly fashioned from hollowed-out earth rather than the tightly packed stone seen elsewhere. More of the tree roots broke through into the passageways and there was a preponderance of cobwebs that increased the farther they walked.

They reached a small circular chamber which branched off into three tunnels, and the pair considered their options. A quick inspection revealed that one of the passages was blocked, the walls of the tunnel having collapsed with thick tree roots jutting down from above.

The other two passage entrances looked almost identical. Both were crudely fashioned with stone floors and dirt walls. There were no signs or symbols anywhere to indicate where the paths might lead.

“What do you think?” Unnamed asked. “Left or right?”

The little kobold considered the question, sniffing the air as he approached the left tunnel and repeating the exercise with the second passageway.
